The characters in my paintings have been practically begging to be brought into the world of 3D. For a long time, they have existed entirely within the flat, two-dimensional space of the canvas, but their bold lines and signature cut-out features always hinted at something more physical. Translating them from the canvas into solid forms has been about giving them the weight and presence they were asking for. These sculptures represent that transition, allowing the narrative to step off the canvas and occupy the physical space around us.
While these figures originate directly from the artwork, this project officially brings them into the Rudeboy Creative Studio family. This expansion allows the painted narratives to exist in a new, tangible context alongside the rest of the studio's work.
The foundational series is constructed from 3D printed TPU plastic. This material choice serves as the origin point for bringing the physical characters to life. Following the printing process, each piece undergoes surface preparation, including sanding and a specialized priming process to ensure a professional substrate. The sculptures are then finished to resolve any surface inconsistencies and elevate the initial form into a fully realized art object. By shaping these pieces in TPU plastic, the exact geometry of the original designs is honored while letting them interact naturally with light and shadow in a room.
The production scope involves creating a twelve-inch physical sculpture derived from the established character designs found in the paintings. The technical specifications include a depth of half an inch and a finished matte surface. The execution moves from digital pre-production and 3D modeling directly to the fabrication of the TPU plastic form. Surface preparation and the application of the character details follow, concluding with an inspection of the structural integrity.
