1991 | The first time police brutality was caught on tape. March 1991, Rodney King was pulled over by by police. The tape does not capture the beginning of the incident, but what it does capture are four police officers beating the shit out of him. It was amazing to finally have such an assault on tape. The consensus was these cops were going to jail. Nah. There was a trial where they were acquitted which sparked the LA riots. However, two of the officers were later convicted and sent to jail in a civil trial, but, the damage was done.

2014 | Eric Garner was selling loosies. This is supposedly a crime, but not a violent one. One day cops were letting him know about it. Eric was not deferential. One of the cops put him in an illegal choke hold and wrestled Eric to the ground. He said he couldn’t breathe. The cop did not let go. Eric Garner had a heart attack. He died.

2015 | Walter Scott was pulled over for a broken tail light. An eye witness relayed that when he came upon the scene the officer had Scott on the ground and the situation contained. At some point Scott gets up and runs. The witness records Walter Scott running away as the officer removes his gun and fires eight shots at Scott; killing him. As the cop calls for backup he says that there was a struggle and that Scott grabbed his taser. The witness claims this did not happen and the video does not show this. The officer then handcuffs the dead man, walks back to pick up a black item believed to be a taser and drops it next to Scott’s body. Another officer arrives to assist.

12 year old Tamir Rice was sitting alone at a playground, when police officers, responding to a call that a black man was waving a gun at people, pulled up to Tamir. One officer exits the police car and immediately shoots Tamir. Before he falls to the ground, Tamir pulls up his shirt to show his toy gun. Tamir died. This description is based on surveillance video since the police report conflicted with what actually happened.

7 year old Aiyana Jones was fast asleep with her grandmother on the living room couch, when police, mistaking her apartment for that of a murder suspect, threw a grenade through a window. Officer Weekley entered the home and immediately began shooting at 'someone' on the couch. Aiyana Jones was burned from the grenade, shot and killed, in front of her grandmother; by another 'mistake.'

Officers came to the apartment of Aaron Campbell to pay a welfare check as he was reported to be suicidal. Not knowing Aaron’s condition, the officers texted him from the parking lot to gain his trust. Coaxed out of his apartment, Aaron walked backwards towards the officers with his hands behind his head. Officers ordered him to stop and put his hands up in the air. Whether there was miscommunication or something else, one officer started shooting bean bag bullets at Aaron’s back. When this did not drop him, they unleashed a police dog. The police dog savaged Aaron. At some point, an officer fired his gun and hit Aaron in his back. He died.

37 year old Natasha McKenna was diagnosed with schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and depression when she was 14 years old. Being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center due to an outstanding warrant, Natasha was awaiting a transfer. Police were already concerned by what they observed as Natasha's deteriorating mental state, when she was restrained with handcuffs, her arms placed behind her back, her legs shackled, and a spit mask placed over her head. At some point a struggle ensued, and Natasha, at 5'4" and 130 pounds was tasered 4 times by a team made up of 6 officers. Due to being stunned, Natasha suffered cardiac arrest and lost consciousness. She was then placed on life support, declared brain dead, and removed from life support 5 days later. She left behind a 7 year old daughter.

Nervous, Sam fumbled around looking in the glove compartment and front seat, eventually admitting he did not have his license with him, but suggested the officer look him up. The officer asked Sam to get out of his car, Sam refused and began to drive away. The officer shot Sam in the head, killing him.

Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea, was on his way home from dinner when he was stopped by the police. We don’t know whether he was spooked, but he ran upstairs to his apartment where he grabbed his wallet. Standing in his staircase he held up his wallet; an officer yelled, ‘gun!’ and they unloaded 41 bullets on Amadou, hitting him 19 times. He died.
